Access and Support Services

The archive is located at The Rooms - Provincial Archives and is accessible through the Provincial Archives reference room or by special appointment with the volunteer archivists.

Background

The Sports Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador (SANL) is under the jurisdiction of the Provincial Archives of Newfoundland and Labrador, with support from Sport Newfoundland and Labrador. Its mandate is to collect and preserve, arrange and describe materials relating to professional and amateur sporting activities in Newfoundland and Labrador. The archives will also make available for public use, textual materials, photographs, sound recordings, and related archival and printed matter that document the history of sport in this province.

From 1974 until his death in 1991, Frank Graham served as the Volunteer Sports Archivist, accumulating an extensive variety of sports history and memorabilia. The archives was closed following his death, but under the impetus of Gail Roberts, then Chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame Committee, organization of the material recommenced with funding from the CCA.

Archival Holdings

The archives consists of personal and business correspondence, scrapbooks, over 5,000 photographs relating to Newfoundland and Labrador sports and sports personalities, clippings documenting Newfoundland sports history, ephemera, minute books, record books, financial statements, and other sports organizational records from approximately 1820 to the present.

Finding Aids/Publications

A Guide to the Holdings is available and was up-dated in 2000. Access will also be available through The Rooms - Provincial Archives on-line database.
