Background
The Girl Guides formed their first company in Newfoundland in 1923. Interest in the organization has grown so that there are now approximately 8,000 Girl Guides and leaders in Newfoundland and Labrador. In 1977 the Provincial Council established residence in Pleasantville. Isabel Templeton had already begun to organize the materials which had been accumulated over the years. Her first year was 1971 and she has continued as the Girl Guide Archivist ever since. In 1992 the Archives became affiliated with the Association of Girl Guides Archives across Canada.
Archival Holdings
The Archives keeps records and artifacts, including uniforms, related to the history of the Girl Guides in the province. Of particular interest are the photographic collection and the hand-drawn journals submitted annually by regional companies.
Finding Aids/Publications
The Archives is in the early stages of formal organization. Finding aids and indexes are in progress.
