The Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives presents a 2-day workshop on
Basic Preservation
Dates: November 18-19, 2010
Location:  ANLA office,  Suite 104, Elizabeth Towers, 100 Elizabeth Ave., St. John’s
(Parking is available in the adjacent parking lot.)
This workshop will introduce participants to basic preservation concepts for archival institutions, including preservation planning, disaster and emergency awareness, security, condition reports and measures to prevent damage and deterioration. Activities will include some hands-on exercises, and participants are encouraged to bring forward any specific preservation concerns they may have about their own holdings.

Fees: Members: $75
Non-members: $100

ANLA recently celebrated its 25th Anniversary! Several special events were held throughout the province and November 2009 was officially declared Archives Month. A special edition of the ANLA bulletin commemorates the Anniversary.

Well, maybe they’re in your storage room, or in your bottom desk drawer – those shoeboxes of cassettes or videos that were collected by a summer project, seniors’ group or JCP worker. These were the recordings that were going to preserve the voices of the past – but here they sit with no voice at all! You don’t know what’s on the recordings, you don’t know much about who made them – maybe you don’t even have the equipment to play them!
Topics to be covered include:

· Recording formats

· Documentation and consent

· Describing, indexing and transcription of contents

· Access issues

· Digitization

· Preservation of originals

How can you get access to those voices from the past? How can you preserve and use them? Dale Jarvis and Mary Ellen Wright will guide you through the process of identifying, arranging, describing, preserving and providing access to older collections that have been donated or made available to you or that already exist in your holdings.

Boxes Under the Bed: Dealing with Backlog Interview Collections

The Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives presents a workshop from the Canadian Conservation Institute:
Works of Art on Paper

Dates: September 15-16, 2011
Location: The Rooms, Bonaventure Ave, St. John’s NL
This workshop is
Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
identify types of paper and different drawing media and printing media
understand and identify agents of deterioration and their effects on paper artifacts
carry out proper handling, examination, and documentation procedures
implement preventive conservation procedures
surface clean, repair, and mount paper artifacts

Target Audience: Museum and gallery staff, volunteers, curators responsible for works of art on paper, and artists.

Enrolment Limits: maximum 18
Registration fees: $70 for ANLA members
                                $95 for non-members

November 3 & 4, 2011

Location: Newfoundland Museum Conservation Laboratory
East White Hills Road, Pleasantville, St. John’s, Newfoundland

 

Two full days, presented by various conservation & preservation experts.

Day 1: Introduction  - What is a Disaster?
- Risk Assessment, Mitigation, & Recovery
- Disaster Preparedness Planning

Day 2: Mock Disaster - Hands-on session: Implementing your Disaster Preparedness Plan.


As space is extremely limited (15 max) please register with the ANLA office ASAP. 
Cost:  $100 for ANLA and MANL members, $125 for non-members  (includes lunch)

The Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives and the Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador present: Disaster Preparedness - An Interactive Workshop

As part of Archives Week, ANLA will be holding a symposium: Archives and Science: Connections. This all day event will take place at The Rooms on Friday November 18, 2011. An exciting line up speakers is planned, each of whom have used archives in their scientific research. You will hear about topics as varied as rabies, mining, the weather and more!
