Between the 1930s and 50s, Doyle visited hundreds of outports aboard his motor yacht Miss Newfoundland as he conducted his business. He had with him a 16mm colour film movie camera, capturing moving images of people, sights, and scenes of pre-Confederation Newfoundland and Labrador. Doyle also collected folksongs on his travels, producing a number of editions of the popular Doyle Songbook. And for more than three decades, the Gerald S. Doyle News Bulletin aired on radio stations VONF/ CBN keeping listeners abreast of what was happening at home and abroad.
